Recently, Algonquin College Interior Decorating student Georgette Angelisgoulet joined us at Malenka Originals for her work placement.
Over the week she was with us, Georgette was given the challenge to upcycle a piece of furniture and design a window display to go along with it. Doesn’t it look great?!
We’re now lucky enough to have Georgette’s finished product decorating our shop window, and the piece is now for sale. Read below about what Georgette has to say about it.

Time for a beautiful but neglected desk to receive a makeover!
With old, dried out varnish peeling off, there was a need to do a bit of sanding and also use paint stripper for more problematic areas. Usually this isn’t needed with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint™, but in this case, it was better to not take any chances of the flaking continuing.
I used the Finico gel Paint Stripper that Katrina uses all the time and sells in the shop. It’s easy to use and works fast.
After that was done, it was time for the fun stuff: colour selection and deciding on the decorative technique. My choice was Provence, a colour bold and bright enough to make me forget the cold and snow covered Ottawa landscape and mentally transport me, if only for a while, to a sun filled Mediterranean seaside.
A colour wash technique using Pure White completed the look. (Katrina’s note: if you’re curious about how to do a wash like Georgette did, check out our YouTube video where we demonstrate using the exact same colours!)
After waxing twice, and lightly distressing certain areas, the desk is ready for a new home.
If you are looking for a designated home office workspace, this once old and dated, now refreshed and vibrant desk might just be it! When not in use, it is still a pretty decorative element to have in your home.
Available at Malenka Originals for $275.
