Malenka Originals believes in the importance of being involved in the community and giving back where possible. Over the last few years, we’ve been overjoyed to help out through fundraisers, donations, events and special projects. Here are a few of those moments.
Workshops for Helping With Furniture (HWF)
During our fifth annual Refreshed Furniture Pop-Up Shop, the Malenka Team ran five workshops throughout the day, with all money going to local charity, Helping With Furniture — in total, we raised $635 for HWF!
HWF provides gently-used furniture and household goods to families and individuals in distress, to help them start new lives in Ottawa.
Upcycling Auction for Habitat for Humanity
As part of a partnership at the Ottawa Home + Remodelling Show, Katrina and her team at Malenka Originals painted four pieces of furniture (three pictured here) that were auctioned off with funds going to Habitat for Humanity.
New Tenant Lounge for Ottawa Community Housing
Out of hundreds of entries, Malenka Originals was selected to transform a tenant lounge and kitchen for Ottawa Community Housing as part of Annie Sloan’s #25Project. A group of volunteers spent a full day completely repainting the lounge and kitchen, as well as refreshing several pieces of furniture.
OCH is Ottawa’s largest social housing provider and provides homes to over 32,000 people with special needs in the city.

Raising Money Fully & Completely for the Gord Downie Trust
In the lead-up to the Tragically Hip’s last performance in Ottawa, Katrina sent out a call to all Hip fans to submit their favourite lyric. For every lyric, Katrina pledged to donate $1 to The Gord Downie Trust for Brain Cancer Research at Sunnybrook. In total, 217 lyrics were submitted. The Malenka Originals store front became a stunning visual representation of the connection people feel with Gord Downie’s lyrics and poetry. We were also really happy to spread the word through interviews on CBC’s All in a Day, as well as with an article on legendary music journalist Alan Cross’ blog.
Thanks to the generosity of our friends at Maker House Co. in Ottawa and Magnolia Flowers in Gananoque — who both matched our donation — we raised $800 together for The Gord Downie Trust for Brain Cancer Research.

Helping Make a House a Home for Syrian Family
A team from Malenka Originals descended on a house in the Glebe, painting up a storm of pieces for a refugee family arriving from Syria.
Uniting around the Workshop Table for the United Way
At the third annual Refreshed Furniture Pop-Up Shop, Katrina ran workshops for 50 people throughout the day, with all money raised going to United For Refugees, during the height of the Syrian Refugee Crisis. Malenka Originals made a donation of $500 to the United Way.
Still more to come! Malenka Originals have been involved in many more special events to give back to the community, and also regularly donates products to charitable silent auctions.
Started in 2011 by Katrina Barclay as an at-home business painting and selling furniture, Malenka Originals opened September 2012 in Britannia Village, Ottawa, and then moved to Hintonburg in March 2016. In March 2023, Katrina left the shop to pursue a new career, but now you will find Recreated Designs in the same location!
